அர்த்தமுள்ள இந்து மதம் - பிள்ளையார் சுழி இட்ட மஹா பெரியவர் 

Once Kaviarasar travelled in a car alongwith Sando Chinnappa Thevar. An accident happened.  Thevar had minor injury and Kaviarasar had major injuries. The latter was admitted in a hospital in unconscious state. 

After admitting Thevar rushed to Kanchi Math to pray before Maha Periyava. Maha Periyava enquired about Kaviarasar's condition, knowing fully well that Kavignar was in the company of atheists. 

He said to Thevar,  

"It's just transitory. Like clouds temporarily hide Sun,  his being atheist wouldn't last. For,  Kavignar's forefathers did do a bigger contributions for Varadaraja Perumal and Kamakshi temples."

He gave Vibuthi Prasad and instructed Thevar to give it to Kavignar. Thevar was worried how Kavignar would react. 

Coming back to hospital and though Kavignar recovered, it was still not yet Kavignar turned fully conscious. Thevar mustered courage and applied Maha Periyava's Vibuthi Prasad on Kavignar's forehead. 

When Kavignar turned conscious, with hesitation and being prepared to face Kavignar's reaction,  Thevar narrated his meeting Maha Periyava to pray and all details including Maha Periyava's recalling of Kavignar family's contributions in constructions of Temples in Kanchipuram. 

Tears swelled in Kavignar's eyes.

He asked Thevar to take him to Kanchi Math. 

Seeing Maha Periyava, Kavignar overwhelmed sang in praise,  

பார்த்த மாத்திரத்தில் பாவத்தை அலம்புகின்ற

தீர்த்தப் பெருக்கு,  திருவாசகத்தின்

உட்கருத்து... 

கலிமொய்க்கும் இவ்வுலகைக் காக்கவந்த

கண்கண்ட தெய்வம்... 

Listening to Kavignar's song, magnanimous Maha Periyava said, "Your praising song applies all to Mahan Seshadhri Swamigal at Ttiruvannamalai."

Maha Periyava continued, "with all your beautiful Tamil, write about all the grateness of the Hindu Religion."

Thus Kavignar began writing his Masterpiece,

Medicine or no - SRI RAMA RAMA RAMETI RAME RAME MANORAME

SAHASRANAMA TATTULYAM RAMA NAMA VARANANE

This is a lingering question like the concept of God. 

Kind of catching the tail of a tiger. 

The charcha is never ending. 

I remember during my recent visits to Drs in the span of last one decade that Drs while prescribing medicines invariably would also tell,  "this medicine doesn't have any side effects."  This is fully a surprise. That I didn't ask the Drs whether medicines would have any side effects. 

Let's go over to see the strategy Maha Periyava used to get over the physical illness without taking in medicines.

Once Maha Periyava had a feeling that his temperature wasn't normal. 

One of His many devotees was an Ayurved Vaidyar by name Pandit Rama Sarma.  The latter had his clinic at Karur by the name Sakthi Vilasa Vaidyasala. 

He had celebrity patients those days. The list included  KB Sundarambal, Kamarajar's mentor Satyamurthi, Namakkal Kavignar. 

On call from the Kanchi Math,  the Vaidhyar rushed.  Seeing him carrying his medical kit,

Maha Periyava said,  "I only asked you to come. And not your medical tool kit."

Dr humbly explained , "I was informed that you had temperature."

M : So be it. If you have a physical body, it's quite natural to be subject to varying temperature and you get fever. You know?  The very fever itself is a healer as well. Then why any medicines?! Well,  there is yet another quite alternate medicine, just to employ that only I called you here. 

Dr got perplexed,  remained silent. Maha Periyava continued. 

M : Just wait.  I'll have a quick bath and be back. 

Dr's confusion  got compounded. He was worried that even having fever Periyava was attempting to have bath. Dr couldn't say anything. He waited. 

After bath,  Maha Periyava asked the Dr to check the temperature. Dr obeyed and temperature was very high. 

M : Good. Shall we both chant Vishnu Sahasranama now? 

Dr nodded. 

Both started chanting. 

Once the chanting was over,  Maha Periyava asked the Dr to check His temperature. 

What a surprise!.

There was no trace of any fever. 

M : I keep telling people the solution for all sufferings lie in chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam. They all listen.  To prove to them, it's true and effective only, I used this opportunity. 

Maha Periyava went on further :

True you need to prescribe medicine. Additionally prescribe Chanting of Vishnu Sahasranamam also. You know Gandhiji believed and practiced nature cure. In nature cure,  prayer is the first priority. 

Sarve Jana Sukhino Bhavanthu!

விவாஹம் - எட்டு விதங்கள்

தர்மசாஸ்திரத்தில் சொல்லியிருப்பன:

1. பிராமம்;

2.தைவம்;

3. ஆர்ஷம்;

4.  ஆஸுரம்

5. பி ராஜாபத்தியம்;

6. காந்தர்வம்;

7. ராக்ஷஸம்;

8. பைசாசம்.

1. பிராமம் - 

பிள்ளையின், குருகுலவாஸம் முடித்து அகம் திரும்பிய,  பெற்றோர்கள் நல்ல குலத்துப் பெண்ணின் மாதா-பிதாவை அணுகி கன்யாதானம் செய்து தரச்சொல்வது.  வரதக்ஷிணை, பரிசம் எல்லாம் இங்கே இரண்டாம் பட்சம். தலையாயது இரண்டு குலங்கள் அபிவிருத்தியாக வேண்டும் என்பதே பிராமம் என்கிற விவாஹம். 

2.தைவம் - 

உரிய காலத்தில் பிள்ளை வீட்டார் பெண் கேட்டு வராத நிலையில் பெண் வீட்டாரே வரன் தேடிச் செல்வது. 

உயர்ந்த ஸ்தானத்தில் ஸ்திரிகுலத்தை மேன்மையுறச் செய்கிற சாஸ்திரத்தில், பெண்ணைப் பிள்ளை வீட்டார் தேடி வருவதே சிலாக்கியமான விவாஹம். மிகவும் சிரேஷ்டமானது. 

3. ஆர்ஷம் - 

இவ் விவாஹம் உரிய காலத்தில் விவாஹம் ஏற்படாத நிலையில் பிள்ளை தருகிற திரவியம் - பொருளைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டு,  மணம் முடிப்பது. 

4. பிராஜாபத்தியம் -

அவஸர கதியில் வரன் தேடிச் சென்று செய்கிற விவாஹம். 

5. ஆஸுரம் -

 அசுர வேகத்தில் ஒரு பெண்ணுக்குத் தான் தகுதியானவான,பொருத்தமானவனா என்றெல்லாம் கருதாது,  தான் நினைத்த பெண்ணை அவள் பெற்றோரிடமோ, உறவினரிடமோ பொருட்களைக் கொடுத்து வசப்படுத்திக் கொள்கிற விதமான விவாஹம் இது. 

6. காந்தர்வம் - 

காதலால் கசிந்து உருகிக் கொள்ளும் விவாஹம். உதாரணம்: சகுந்தலை, துஷ்யந்தன் விவாஹம். 

7. ராக்ஷஸம் - 

பெண்ணுக்கும் பிள்ளையிடத்தில் விருப்பம். பிள்ளைக்கும் அவ்வண்ணமே. இருப்பினும் பெற்றோர் தடை. தடையை வென்று செய்து கொள்ளும் விவாஹம்  இவ்விதம். உதாரணம் பகவான் கிருஷ்ணர் -ருக்மணி விவாஹம். 

8. பைசாசம் - 

இது அத்துமீறல் விவாஹம். பெண் இஷ்டம் என்னவென்பதைக் கருத்தில் கொள்ளாது வற்புறுத்தி நடைபெறும் விவாஹம். 

அனைத்து விதங்களும் சாஸ்திரத்தில் சொல்லப்பட்டிருந்தாலும், கிருஹலக்ஷ்மியாக இருக்க வேண்டியவளை பிள்ளையின் மாதா-பிதா தேடிவந்து,  கேட்டுப் பண்ணிக் கொள்கிற முதலாவதாகச் சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கும் விதமான 'பிராமம்' தான் சாலச் சிறந்தது. 

அநாயாஸம்

தயை - Compassion; 

க்ஷாந்தி - acceptance,  forgiveness;

அநஸூயை - being without jealous;

சௌசம் - cleanliness;

அநாயாஸம் -   effortlessly performing;

மங்களம் -   blissfulness;

அகார்ப்பண்யம் - not being miser

அஸ்ப்ருஹா - detachment 

The above are 8 characteristics which Maha Periyava lists that one should have. 

Here we take up 'அநாயாஸம்'. We may have heard in sports commentaries. The commentators would glorify a player playing the game effortlessly - அநாயாஸமாக விளையாடினார். 

For, He addresses about stress. 

More than the real diseases, it's more the psychosis, unwarranted tension and  fear which are the real killers. The statistics of those succumbing to stress is mind-boggling. 

We see in life people are too worried, tensed even about trivial issues and make out to the world as if they carry like Hercules all the world's burden. Too serious and cause others also see their pressures shooting up. 

Maha Periyava expresses this அநாயாஸம் as one quintessential of all the above attributes that every one ought to imbibe. 

○When one performs,  works,  the aesthetic of the performance,  the work should speak,  be visible. Not to say remain lazy and without doing one's wont duty. Do it like a Swan. When you see it floating on water,  you will see it so equipoised and not any strain on its countenance. Whereas,  it keeps its feet fluttering in clockwork precision under water. 

○When you anchor yourself in the Self,  you would do much more productively. 

○At the same time,  you don't cause strain to others around also. 

○Not to say there's no demanding in any work. Yes, there would be. Love to do it. 

While Khalil Gibran puts it bluntly, 

"Work is love made visible. And if you cannot work with love, but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms from those who work with joy. For if you bake bread with indifference, you bake a bitter bread that feeds but half our hunger."

Eckhart Tolle sums it so beautifully :

"Life isn't as serious as you make it out to be."

वेदोऽखिलो धर्ममूलं

  வேதோ (அ) கிலோ தர்ம மூலம். 

The worst drawback of us,  that's most of the Hindus,  is we never turn to our Vedas unlike others, invariably everyone of them, turning to their Gospels so religiously. 

This very birth is to create no more pains - affliction for one's own self and to others - and toe the path to liberation.

So, 

Are we to remain recluse?

In trance always?

Will we be, in such state, useless to the society we live in? 

Hear from Maha Periyava :

ஆத்ம க்ஷேமத்துக்காக நாம் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டுமோ அதிலேயே லோகக்ஷேமத்தையும் பயனாக ஏற்படுத்தித் தருவது வேதம். இந்த இரண்டும் ஏற்பட எது உதவுகிறதோ அது தான் 'தர்மம்' என்பது.  அந்த தர்ம மூலமாக வேதம் இருப்பது வாஸ்தவம் தான். வேதோ (அ) கிலோ தர்ம மூலம்.

Purana not just a popular word to depict anything ancient, historic.

It's story way to get across succinct Veda to all strata regardless of literacy levels. 

People - be they highly intellectual or even not so - are eager and curious to read and listen to stories. 

How do we drive home the philosophy, righteous way of living deeply enshrined in Vedas, in their very form - abstruse terms?

Epics,  the Purana in their story style come handy and easily reach people's hearts. This, Purana, explains the reason that people adhere to dharmic way and dread anything not righteous. 

Anything not preserved and treasured drift and evaporate into insignificance. Purana is no exception.

The ancient Jambukeshwarar Temple. 

How old is it? 

About 1300 + years. 

Where is the reference. 

In Appar's தேவாரம். 

Kshetra's epic:

The Lord Eshwar found a comfortable place under a Java plum நாவல் பழ tree. 

Hence the Eshwar's name: Jambukeshwara 

Some etymology :

जमबू in Sanskrit. 

Java, Jamun all European languages spring from the deep roots of the Mother language Sanskrit. 

When some, who implant hate, aversion here,  call it - Sanskrit - a dead language,  don't know whether to laugh or cry. 

Back to kshetra Purana,  the epic:

See,  the tree is even older than the temple. 

A devout spider spun a web over the Lord so as to save Him from scorching heat and kept worshipping the Lord all the time. 

There was a devout elephant also.

The elephant poured water piercing the spider web to bathe the Lord.  Annoyed,  the spider got into the long trunk of the pachyderm and tormented him/her - pardon me for not knowing the elephant's Gender. Thank God!.

The statute, General Clauses Act,  comes in handy.  Under it,  he includes she and vice versa. 

Well unable to bear the pain,  the elephant dashed violently on a wall and brought to an end to both. 

This spider later took a rebirth as  King Kochengatch Chola.  This King was the one who built the monumental Master Temple which we see today near River Cauvery. 

States - political class - may fight on rights over water,  and fan fanaticism. But the River Mata Cauvery still springs in the very Sanctum of the Lord Jambukeshwara. 

Apt to wrap this up with Dr.  V's quote :

"When I go to the meditation room at the hospital every morning,  I ask God that I be a better tool,  a receptacle for the divine force. We can all serve humanity in our normal professional lives by being more generous and less selfish in what we do."
